Just another quick observation: depending on whether or not you are in "red mode" (ie using a+c to kill enemies) you get different bullet cancellations.

True, I recall that the "Pinks" (tower things) in stage 4 have half their bullets canceled when hit with laser only, and all of them canceled when hit with RED.

BTW, hermosaguy I think the stage 4 vocals are pretty nuts.  Especially when you get around the mid-boss in strong mode, it's some of the most intimidating music I've heard in a shooter yet.

After holding down A and C your meter in the upper right goes from blue to red.  If you fire holding down A it steadily decreases.

Does A+C act as a toggle into red mode ? Or do you have to keep them pressed ?

You have to keep them pressed.

Notes from the field:

High scores at Hey for Power mode were 230 bil (with B type).  Alpha channel had a 210 bil clear with Strong. I scored 160 today but still haven't made significant inroads into stage 5.

The guy who hit 230 was an absolute beast at the game already, flipping in and out of hyper mode, hitting every white bee and showing me some new tricks.

Like: bomb and life items cancel all bullets on the screen, so he would kill a bomb carrier, let the bomb item float around and then grab it when he had the boss shooting out a ton of shit with RED.

People have some crazy patterns already to maximize on the bullet canceling properties of the bees.  For instance the first installation after the stage 3 midboss, immediately after destroying it, dive directly up and take the yellow bee as the helicopters come down.  Lots of stars.  All kinds of stunting today.   :o

Because chains usually don't get cut after dying in Power mode, I think this will be the first mode to really hit the score ceiling in a month or two.  The game is harder than 1.5, but that's not saying much since 1.5 is really easy.  However scoring on 1.5 in general is, at this stage, much much harder than BL.  It will remain so because of all the anal chaining and obscure hyper rules that you have to memorize to carry your chain across the stage.

The real challenges will be Bomb and Strong mode, for whom getting into the Ura boss route is already quite tough since hypers are slower to build, and the more you use RED shot, the more bullets fill the screen.  I saw people getting the regular boss route over and over again.

Thanks for the constant info, adverse. Am I wrong to say that this seems to be the most complex CAVE game scoring-wise? With all the different shot modes, the RED meter and several ingame rules (like just some of the enemies have their bullets cancelled and such)?
I watched that run, but there's a thing I don't get: aren't you supposed to milk out the bullet cancelling a lot in DFK? He doesn't use hypers at all until later in the game, and just for survival.
Random questions: When you're talking about white bees, you're referring to picking them up when they're switching from color to color?
Also I don't understand what exactly is "Normal" and "Boost"...

(oh and very nice new music ;) )

I think the new BGM is a mixed bag. Stages 1-3 are quite good, and Stage 5 is better than DFK's stage 5 music, but Stage 4's music is crap, as are the new EX boss and Hibachi tracks. Also, the new boss track, while not bad, isn't as good as the old one.

Going off zlk's note about different cancellations for different shots, I wonder if there is some sort of interplay between jacking up the RED meter-> destroying them with regular laser or shot.  Like maybe you only get the multiplier applied when destroying stuff via regular shots...? will have to test it out.

From a purely encoding perspective... has the guy who posted this video even heard of bob filters? >.>;

I'm not sure what to think of the music... will probably need to give it a few more listens.

The gameplay is as incomprehensible to me as kosher DFK was to me... I get the feeling it's something I just won't understand unless I have the game in my hands.

So am I correct in understanding that Strong is the most difficult mode (or was that disproved and I somehow missed the post)? That Power-style Hibachi looks brutal, I can't really imagine it getting any harder.

If I remember correctly, EOJ said that in CAVE's blog it was stated it's done by Basiscape, so most surely Manabu Namiki handled it; maybe with some collaborations from Mitsuhiro Kaneda, p.e. or Yoshimi Kudo, like in the original.

i dont like the music.

I have to agree I do miss the throwbacks to previous DDP music. It was one of the original's strong and cool characteristics, I'm surprised they decided to scrap that completely.
So far I'm really liking Stage1 and Stage5, and Stage4 has a cool and intimidating mood to it. The Hibachi theme is a nice evolution from 1.5's, tho I actually prefer Longhena Cantata as the regular last boss theme, that was one of 1.5' best songs IMO. And although the bosses themes were really nice in 1.5, they're pretty nice here, too.

Yea Strong is the hardest. Pretty much loop difficulty but I'd say a touch harder than that when it comes to the boss fights. I had fun playing it with auto-bomb on but it will prove a stiff challenge to take it on without the crutch.

The game is a lot of fun and I think more accessible than DFK 1.5. For that one, if you just try to survive your score will be abysmal, but in DFK BL, successfully surviving will net you good points without requiring the player to tattoo the correct chaining paths to memory. Plus, I can think of only one instance in half a dozen runs where my chain broke that wasn't caused by getting hit. DOJ this ain't.

I don't think he mentioned it, but when Adverse and I were trying to check the previous scores on the PCB by hitting the A button at the high score screen, it froze. Got a free credit out of it tho :righton:

Funnily enough, I had pretty much the exact opposite opinion; though I'll agree the replacement for longhena cantata isn't as good.
